Maid, by Stephanie Land, is a remarkable autobiography about a single mother in poverty and her will to survive. Stephanie Land shares her tragic yet inspirational story with her daughter Mia. Stephanie Land is a writer featured in the New York Times, the Washington Post, The Atlantic, the Guardian, and many others; her writing focuses on social and economic justice. As a domestic abuse survivor, Stephanie Land is very sensitive to women's particular struggles when homeless, impoverished, and without a support network. They often find themselves without a place to sleep.
At 28 years old, Stephanie Land's life and dreams were turned upside down when she found out she was pregnant with her abuser's baby. Before long, she found herself a single mother, working as a maid to make ends meet. Yet, Land was driven to make a better life for Mia. Maid Is Stephanie Land's story, but it is not hers alone. Instead, it is an inspiring testament to the human spirit's courage, determination, and ultimate strength.
Maid is a beautiful story that I rated a 5/5 on Goodreads; I would recommend this book to anyone. This story has completely changed my perspective on a lot of different things. If more people read this book, we would grow as a community. There is also a Netflix adaptation that is worth watching, the book is undoubtedly better, but this adaptation helps us understand that Land is not alone in her struggle.
