They Both Die At The End, by Adam Silvera, is a memorable story about two boys seeking adventure on the last day of their lives. The reader can view the story from all perspectives and can witness the lives of surrounding people. This young adult novel is considered “A bold, lovely, and haunting story of loss, hope, and the redeeming power of friendship” by Lauren Oliver. They Both Die At The End is personally my favorite book that I have read this year; I rated They Both Die At The End a 5/5 on Goodreads. Adam Silvera is known for his LGBTQ+ and Young Adult writing. He has grown to be my favorite author because of his writing style and his inclusive topics.
They Both Die At The End starts a little after midnight when Mateo Torrez and Rufus Emeterio get a life-changing call. They are told that within the next twenty-four hours, they will die. Mateo and Rufus, total strangers, yearn for a new friendship on their End Day, so they download The Last Friends App for people expecting death. Through the app, Rufus and Mateo meet up for one final epic adventure-to live a lifetime in a single day. Rufus and Mateo learn much from and about each other. Throughout this book, risks are made, boundaries are broken, romance bloomed, and lives are lived to the fullest.
This book is definitely my favorite read, and I recommend it to everyone. My favorite aspect of They Both Die At The End is the recurring theme of living life to its fullest. Adam Silvera thoroughly explains the importance of one’s life by writing about how sudden and quick lives can end. This story also has many moments surrounding friendship and found family. I have nothing to critique about this beautifully written book, only that it left me in tears.
