The Summer I Turned Pretty by Jenny Han is a beautiful y/a story that will surely leave butterflies. This novel is the perfect beach read or a book to read while lounging at a pool. The Summer I Turned Pretty is a trilogy, and this first book is told from the perspective of our main character, Belly. This definitely isn't the first time we have heard of the incredible, fan-favorite, Korean-American author, Jenny Han; Han was also the author of the teen favorite To All The Boys I Loved Before trilogy. I rated this book a 5/5 on Goodreads, putting me in a perfect summer mindset.
Belly Conklin, her mom, and her brother spend every summer at a beach house with her mom's best friend, Susannah, and her two sons. Every summer is the same the beach, the pool, the 4th of July, and the 3:1 ratio of boys and girls. For as long as Belly can remember, she has always had a crush on the oldest brother, Conrad, and he has always viewed her as a younger annoying sister, but this summer, she wanted things to change. Belly, I had always been so focused on Conrad that she never noticed the other brother, Jeremiah's, feelings for her. Now she must figure out what to do without hurting anyone in the process.
This book is a perfect summer read, and I recommend it to everyone. I especially love the author and how she declared that she wrote this book listening to Taylor Swift. Taylor Swift is my favorite musician, and I love the correlation between books and music. I am generally not one to read romance books, but this story was so sweet, innocent, and perfect for a teen read. This book was a book that I read in one sitting, and I have nothing to critique.
