The Maze Runner, by James Dashner, is an incredible story about a teenage boy who gets put unwillingly into an unknown situation. The reader follows the main character through stressful situations and hard decisions. This suspenseful novel is considered “A nail biting-must read,” by Seventeen.com. By Kirkus Reviews, this book was said to be “Heart-pounding to the very last moment.” I agree with Kirkus Reviews because my heart was pounding up until the last moment. I rated The Maze Runner a 5/5 on Goodreads. James Dashner is known for his excellent dystopian novels. Along with the five Maze Runner Novels and three Novellas, James Dashner is known for many other written works.
The Maze Runner starts when a teenage boy wakes up in a dark room with only the memory of his name, Thomas. The doors open, and Thomas finds himself surrounded by around fifty teenaged boys. The boy is welcomed into a place called the Glade. The Glade is a large square piece of land with a few wood and concrete buildings, they are surrounded by extremely high stone walls covered in thick ivy, and there are four large stone doors. Thomas soon learns that behind the walls is a giant maze full of Grievers, violent mechanical creatures that only come out at night. On the same day every month, the elevator brings a new male arrival, but this time the elevator returns with a teenaged girl in a coma. Within the next few days, everything changes for the worst. With everything changing, Thomas leads a group out of the maze. There are so many challenges along with the way and so many heartfelt moments. I love this book!
The Maze Runner was a fantastic read and threw me deep into the dystopian world. I strongly recommend this novel to everyone who loves dystopian. My favorite theme throughout the book is the lifelong friendship between the boys in the maze. I love this book and all of its themes. The Maze Runner book was also turned into three incredible movies, directed by Wes Ball.
