Queen of Hearts, by Colleen Oaks, is a remarkable story about Princess Dinah in early Wonderland. We can look into the past and discover why the Queen of Hearts is a ruthless villain with this story. With Lewis Carroll’s book, Alice and Wonderland, we know that the Queen is a “childish, foul-tempered monarch whom Carroll himself describes as “a blind fury”, and who is quick to give death sentences at the slightest offense.” Queen of Hearts is my favorite book that I have ever read. I rated Queen of Hearts a 5/5 on Goodreads. Colleen Oaks is known by her adult and teen audience. Along with her Queen of Hearts trilogy, she is also known for her Wendy Darling trilogy.
This is not the story of the Wonderland we know. Alice has not fallen down a rabbit hole. There is no all-knowing cat with a taunting smile. This is a Wonderland where beneath each smile lies a secret, each tart comes with a demand, and only prisoners tell the truth. Dinah is the princess, soon to be Queen of Wonderland. With the betrayal of her father, Dinah realizes that she is oblivious to the darkness of Wonderland. Accompanied by the boy she loves, Dinah goes on an adventure that changes her life. Dinah must stay one step ahead of her cunning enemies, or she’ll lose not just the crown but her head. In this story, they don’t live happily ever after.
This book is definitely my favorite read ever, and I recommend it to those who love Fantasy. I love how this book has a female lead who is strong and independent. In addition, I like the political aspect of the story. I overall love this story and love Colleen Oaks.
